ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Federal officials have identified more than 50 square miles of government-owned property across the U.S. as having great potential for renewable energy projects. The parcels are all located within the boundaries of national laboratories and other research sites that share a legacy centered around development of the nation’s nuclear arsenal. The U.S. Energy Department on Tuesday announced plans for a large-scale solar project and energy storage system at the nation’s underground nuclear waste repository in southern New Mexico. It is the latest of the projects being lined up for locations that span from the Hanford Site in Washington to Nevada, Idaho and South Carolina.
