Missouri’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday begins Friday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri's annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins Friday and will continue throughout the weekend.

The sales tax holiday officially began just after midnight Friday and will run through midnight on Sunday.

The 2024 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday exempts all state and local sales or use tax taxes during the exemption period on qualifying items. During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing, and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax.

According to a sales tax holiday press release, state and local sales tax will not be charged on the following items:

Clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100. School supplies, not exceeding $50 per purchase, that are used in a standard classroom for educational purposes. Personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500 and computer peripheral devices that do not cost more than $1,500.

Items that do not qualify for the sales tax holiday include:

Watches, watchbands, jewelry, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands, or belt buckles in terms of clothing.

In terms of school supplies; radios, CD players, headphones, sporting equipment, portable or desktop telephones, copiers or other office equipment, furniture, or fixtures.

Computers that exceed $1,500 is also a disqualified item.

In addition to the state sales tax, local sales tax will also be waived in all cities, counties and special tax districts.

Anyone who makes a qualified purchase may participate in the holiday. You do not have to be a Missouri resident or student to participate.
