Some Missouri Democratic delegates show support for Harris after Biden steps away from campaign

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Some Missouri Democratic delegates say Vice President Kamala Harris is a strong candidate to be the next Democratic presidential nominee following President Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 race.

Biden made the announcement on Sunday afternoon, stating he believed it is in the best interest of the country and Democratic Party, if he focuses his time on finishing his term. Zach Dunn, a Biden delegate from Congressional District 3, said he understands the president's decision.

"I think it's really important that we acknowledge that President Biden listened to the country," Dunn said. "You know, I think some people were surprised by his announcement that he's not going to seek reelection. Put you know, President Biden really listened to the American people."

A number of Democrats had called on Biden to bow out of the race following his debate with former President Donald Trump last month.

Others like Sue Gibson who was also a Biden delegate, said she was disappointed to hear Sunday's news, but values his time spent in office.

"I understand completely and appreciate all that he's done and appreciate his intent with the decision," Gibson said. "He has always had the best for our country as his intention."

Gibson is a member of the National Organization for Women. Gibson said she was at the organization's annual conference over Zoom when Biden made the announcement. She said the group opted to support Harris, including herself.

Gibson said she anticipates Harris receiving the support necessary to become the next candidate, adding she expects her to win the election over Trump.

"I hope there's not a serious challenge (from other Democrats) because Kamala is, Kamala deserves it...she's already been vetted. She's been ready to step into that position at any time for almost four years already, and I have the utmost confidence in her," Gibson said.

Dunn said he is now an unpledged delegate following Biden's decision to drop out.

"While I still think she has to earn that nomination, you know, I am, you know, trying to keep an open mind myself to see if we have any other candidates pop up," Dunn said. "But as of right now, I think Kamala is very strong choice."

Biden's decision comes less than a month before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where the party will nominate its candidate. Both Dunn and Gibson are both planning to attend the convention.

Dunn said he believe Biden making his decision at this time gives Democrats the adequate time to nominate someone. He said he doesn't think there is too much of a greater sense of urgency.

"So, you know, I'm not going to rush the process," Dund said. "I don't think anybody wants to rush through the process... but at the same time, I think we want to identify who who the best nominee would be."
