Multiple sheriff’s offices warn of impersonation phone scam

MGN

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Several Mid-Missouri law enforcement agencies in the past 10 days have warned residents about a scam that impersonates their deputies or each sheriff’s office.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Monday social media post that it had received reports of someone claiming to be Deputy John Clark was calling people in an attempt to scam them.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Saturday social media post that it was notified by residents of a scam. The post states a Caller ID will show “Callaway County Sheriff’s Office” along with its phone number or another local phone number. The post says the caller will ask residents to speak with them about an “urgent matter” before trying to pry personal information.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office on May 17 shared a social media post it warned residents about last year. The scam involves impersonating a deputy. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office said the office will never call someone about their warrants or collect money online. BCSO says this scam in particular has been a constant issue.

The Callaway County post also stated it would never ask for money over the phone and asked for residents to “inform older generations that aren’t as ‘tech savvy.’”

“STOP the conversation and HANG UP! The Sheriff's Office will never call you asking for money to be sent to some random address. When in doubt call 573-642-7291 option 6 and asked to speak to a deputy,” CCSO’s post states.
