Boone County Sheriff’s Office warns of scam impersonating deputies on phone

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Sheriff's Office is once again warning residents on social media about scammers impersonating deputies in order to get money from potentional victims.

"We have been made aware that scammers are targeting the area again by calling citizens and impersonating members of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office (and probably other law enforcement officer)," the Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "As a reminder, NO reputable law enforcement agency/officer will ever call you and ask for you to make a payment over the phone. Two of the most common scams include claims that the recipient of the call has missed jury duty or failed to pay a ticket that resulted in a warrant being issued for their arrest."

The Sheriff's office asks residents to not provide scammers with personal information.

"Law enforcement will NEVER ask you to wire/transfer money to them. If you receive such a call it is a scam. Also, please DO NOT provide any bank account #'s, credit card information, or any other personal information to these impersonators," the office wrote.

The Sheriff's Office warned about a similar scam in August.
