Mizzou softball falls short in second SEC Championship appearance in three years
AUBURN, Ala. (KMIZ)
The No. 5-seeded Mizzou softball team could not pull off the upset in Saturday's SEC Championship game in Auburn, Alabama. The Tigers fell to No. 2-seeded Florida, 6-1, in head coach Larissa Anderson's second conference title game appearance in three years.
The Gators got on the board first in a big way and never looked back. In the second inning, freshman Mia Williams crushed a three-run homer off of Laurin Krings to give her team a three-run lead over Mizzou. Williams wasn't the only Gator to homer, though. In the fifth inning, Skylar Wallace hit a two-run shot to center field to put some more cushion on her team's lead, 6-1.
Florida also capitalized on some uncharacteristic mistakes from Anderson's group. The Tigers came into Saturday's championship game with no errors through the entire SEC Tournament, but the squad finished with three in the loss. One error actually resulted in a score for Florida, as a runner reached home on a fielding error in the third inning.
The lone RBI came off the bat of Stefania Abruscato, as she flew out in the fourth inning. Overall, Mizzou finished with six hits on the day, but went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Up next - Mizzou will await its NCAA fate. The Tigers' goal is to host an NCAA Regional and maybe even a Super Regional at the Mizzou Softball Stadium. The team will find out if that dream will come true on Sunday, May 12 at 6 p.m. during the NCAA Selection Show.
