KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Kansas City Chiefs and tight end Travis Kelce have come to an agreement on a two-year contract adjustment.
Insider Tom Pelissero reported that the new deal runs through 2025 and the $34.5 million replaces the $30.25 million that was left on his old deal. As a result, he will be the highest-paid tight end in the league.
Back in 2020, Kelce signed a four-year extension with the Chiefs, which was worth just over $57 million. His new contract will run through the 2028 season, which will put him at 38 years old.
The All-Pro and Pro Bowl tight end has spent his entire career in Kansas City, as he was first drafted in 2013 in the third round by head coach Andy Reid's staff. In his time with KC, the team has sustained its success. The Chiefs have appeared in four out of the last five Super Bowls, winning three rings with Kelce locking it down at the tight end position.
34-year-old Kelce caught 93 passes for 984 yards in the 2023, Super Bowl winning season. He also had five touchdowns, but battled through some injury, as well. However, he was a game changer in Kansas City's run to the Super Bowl. In four games he caught 32 passes for 355 yards and three touchdowns.
In the Super Bowl win over the San Fransisco 49ers, specifically, Kelce snagged nine passes for 93 yards in the three-point win in Las Vegas.
Over the course of his 11 seasons in the league, the Ohio-native ranks fourth all time in receiving yards and fifth in touchdowns amongst all tight ends. He also eclipsed 49ers legend Jerry Rice's record for the most postseason receptions during the Chiefs' AFC Championship win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes reacted to the news on social media on Monday afternoon. He said, "I told y'all I'll never let him leave. Congrats my guy!"
