Voters backed abortion rights. Yet Kansas could make doctors ask patients why they want abortions

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is moving closer to requiring abortion providers to ask patients why they’re terminating their pregnancies and report the answers to the state. It would join at least eight other states with Republican legislatures that ban most abortions even though Kansas voters have affirmed abortion rights. The state House voted 81-39 on Thursday to approve a bill imposing the reporting requirements, sending it to the Senate. Kansas affirmed abortion rights decisively in an August 2022 statewide vote, and critics said the bill breaks faith with voters. Backers say they simply want the state to collect better data about why women have abortions so legislators can make better policy.
