Google Fiber coming to Jefferson City after City Council approves agreement
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Jefferson City Council on Tuesday night unanimously approved an agreement that would bring Google Fiber services to the city.
Google Fiber is a broadband internet service ran by Google, the company most known for its search engine website. Google Fiber has been in Kansas City since 2012.
Google Fiber spokeswoman Rachel Merlo stated during Tuesday night’s meeting that construction is expected to start by the end of this year and the first customers would start receiving internet by the first half of 2025. The “full rollout” of the service is expected to take about two or three years. Merlo stated download speeds of 1 GB a month has remained at $70 a month for customers in Kansas City since it launched.
Merlo said Google Fiber was working with the city directly instead of the Public Service Commission because it does not include a cable or telephone product.
Google Fiber will pay Jefferson City a percentage of gross revenue – set at 1% in the agreement – for each calendar quarter.
According to its website, some residents in public housing and affordable housing properties may receive free internet services.
Merlo told ABC 17 News on Thursday that the network will be built in the public right of way, which could include construction in front of homes in Jefferson City.
