Mizzou Gymnastics focused on consistency in month of February
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
After securing the team's highest-ranked win in program history against No. 3 LSU on Jan. 26, Mizzou Gymnastics is turning the page to the month of February. The Tigers are preparing to travel to Texas Woman's University for their first meet of the month on Saturday, Feb. 3.
"Friday night was awesome. That was a great experience for our team and our fans and everybody involved. But, we also have to look beyond that, and go okay hey, would that have been good enough in the postseason to get us where we need to go, and the answer is no. It's not," Shannon Welker said at Wednesday's press conference. "We need to be more solid across the board, and we talked about that on Monday. February is really a time for us to put all four events together. We've shown greatness on each event throughout the month of January. But, we need to do that more often in the same evening."

As Welker and company move a month closer to the SEC Championships and NCAA regionals, his team is focused on being more consistent in February. In Mizzou's upset victory over LSU on Friday, the Tigers tied their second-best team score in program history on bars, floor and vault. However, Mizzou's team score on beam was the only one that did not reach the 49.000-mark, allowing LSU to take the lead with one rotation left. Welker's team is striving to increase the consistency of its team scores moving forward.
"We have enough information, and they have had enough competitive experience now, and previously before getting here, that we should be at a point where we have the confidence we can go out there and get that done," Welker said. "Once you stop tinkering with lineups, then you have an opportunity to kind of get into a little bit more of a rhythm. So we're kind of transitioning into that right now, and I would expect that the consistency should be at a higher level across the board as we solidify some lineups, too."
Kennedy Griffin earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors after recording a career-high 9.975 routine on floor. She also explained how the team can post more consistent scores across all four events in a single meet.
"Mainly just for like the people that do multiple events and as teammates, taking it one event and one skill and one routine at a time is really important and not focusing on any little mishaps, just really focusing on what we can do," Griffin said.
Saturday's meet against Texas Woman's University is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
