Tracking arctic air this weekend ahead of more rain and warmth next week

TODAY: After the return of snow overnight, Friday will be noticeably colder than Thursday. Highs may not climb out of the single digits for many. A forecast of 10 degrees is expected in Columbia through the heat of day. We'll have some sunshine early, with more clouds returning late in the day.

TONIGHT: Expect temperatures to fall subzero into early Saturday, with windchills in the 10-20 below zero range.

EXTENDED: Low clouds linger overnight, and have a chance at dispersing through midday, for most. We'll keep partly cloudy skies in the forecast for potential stubbornness in regards to clouds, and highs forecast in the low teens. Friday and Saturday are both ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Days for the dangerous cold. Things begin to improve Sunday as arctic high pressure slides east, allowing south winds to return. This brings highs on Sunday, to just near freezing. While improvement continues into Monday, temperatures may still be below freezing, as rain moves in during the morning hours on Monday. This will bring a window for freezing rain, possibly during the Monday morning commute. Should this materialize, travel will be dangerous until warming temperatures and more rain melt any ice accumulation through the day on Monday. Rain and warming continue in the forecast through Thursday. We'll likely have highs in the 40s, and lows in the 30s for most of next week.
