Grayson Cottages residents without water and heat during extreme cold temperatures
COLUMBIA, Mo.(KMIZ)
Some residents of Grayson Cottages in Columbia have been without heat and water for the past three days, due to extreme cold weather.
Grayson Cottages is an apartment complex in south Columbia where a number of University of Missouri students live.
Resident Hailey Ray said she and her roommates have not been able to shower, brush their teeth or do the dishes and that they have been maintaining a 40-degree temperature in the apartment.
"We put a couple of emergency emergency requests in and we contacted the office; like, called them and everything like that. Nobody really got back to us," Ray said.
A maintenance worker told some residents that there were about 50 units are without heat, according to Ray. In more Facebook posts, residents claimed to have reached out to the complex requesting heaters and a timeline on when the issues will be resolved.
Residents said they have been wrapping themselves with multiple blankets, space heaters and some have used their ovens to help them stay warm. Taylor Pannel, another resident of Grayson Cottages, said she has been waiting days for the complex to bring a space heater to her apartment.
Pannel said she waited a day to call maintenance after having issues.
"So, the first time we called, there was no answer, and then that was Day 2. There was still no water. So, we called again and they (Grayson Cottages) said they would bring out a heater to us. And that day they still didn't bring a heater," Pannel said. "So Day 3, we called back and I was wondering when they'd bring a heater and they said they'd run out and had to go get more. And they still never got one to me, so my pipes were still frozen."
With classes at MU resuming on Tuesday after winter break, students will be making their way back to the complex and it could cause more issues.
"School is starting up this week and, you know, it's hard to be in school and focus on that whenever you're coming home and your house is 40 to 45 degrees and you can't shower, you can't use the bathroom, brush your teeth, cook anything," Emma Littrel said.
