A motion to reduce the bond for a Columbia man accused in a June homicide on Dove Drive was denied on Friday.

Ja’Shaun Barney, 18, was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon  in relation to the shooting death of Deshon Joseph Houston, 33, who was found dead outside of a home in the 3200 block of Dove Drive on June 26.

He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. His next court date was not listed on Casenet, but jail records indicate that a court appearance is set for 8:30 a.m. Monday, March 4.

Police previously arrested Jajuan Crockett, 22; Damarkus Williams, 18; and Bryton Allen, 20, all of Columbia, in connection with the homicide investigation. All three were charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

Police are still looking for three men, who are also charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action:

  • Alqueze Jones, 19
  • Deljuan Turner, 19
  • Deazes Turner, 21

Warrants for their arrests were issued July 7 and no bond was set.

Crockett has a hearing set for 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22. He is in custody at the Missouri Department of Corrections after his probation was revoked in another case and he was sentenced to six years on Dec. 29. He pleaded in 2021 to drug possession and was initially sentenced to probation.

Williams has a hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday and is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond.

Allen has a hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29. He is being held at the Missouri Department of Corrections after he was sentenced to four years on Nov. 27 for another case. He pleaded guilty to resisting arrest in 2021 and was initially sentenced to probation.

Police responded to a home in the 3200 block of Dove Drive around 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 26 for a call of shots fired, where they found a man dead, later identified as Houston. Police then responded to a second scene in the 3800 block of West Gibbs Street near Interstate 70 Drive Northwest that they said was connected to the Dove Drive scene.

Allen was one of the men accused of shooting from two vehicles, a white Ford Explorer and a gold Acura, when Houston was shot in the head, according to court documents. The vehicles sped away from the scene after the shooting and the Ford Explorer, which had allegedly been stolen, crashed.

According to previous reporting, Witnesses described people shooting from the SUV and someone standing up in the Acura's sunroof and firing a gun. Police believe Crockett was in the SUV and Williams was in the Acura.

In addition, there were two other people later connected with the case, according to law enforcement.

Alex Glay, 23, was charged with hindering the prosecution of a felony and resisting arrest after he was accused of helping Ja'Shaun Barney try to escape police on Nov. 2. He posted a $3,000 bond on Nov. 6 and an arraignment is set for 9 a.m. Friday, Jan 19.

Prosecutors also charged Maurice Penny, 40, with hindering a felony prosecution and resisting arrest after police claimed he played a role in preventing Barney’s arrest. He is being held at the Boone County Jail on a $20,000 bond. He has a hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29.
