Missouri GOP leaders say LGBTQ+ issues will take a back seat to child care, education policy in 2024

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Republican leaders of the Missouri Legislature are prioritizing education and child-care policies over additional laws directed at LGBTQ+ people. Missouri’s annual legislative session began Wednesday. Last year, Republicans passed restrictions on gender-affirming health care for minors and sex-based limits on participating in school sports. Top lawmakers in the House and Senate say the focus this year will instead be on child care and issues including greater access to charter and non-public schools. Several rank-and-file Republicans are pushing to revoke the four-year expiration date on last year’s transgender-related laws. Other proposals would place restrictions on library books that are available for minors.
