Ground-breaking ceremony held for Beacon of Light Community Center

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A ground-breaking ceremony was held Wednesday morning for the Beacon Of Light Community Center .

The center will be located in the 1800 block of Towne Drive in Columbia and will serve children and families in the area.

The facility will include a community kitchen, gymnasium, classrooms and training rooms.

"We're in the process of setting the schedule for demolition and that will be done hopefully within the next month," United Community Builders Executive Director Damian Dean said. "We'll start that process and then after demolition starts, then we will have approximately 12 to 14 months for the actual structure to be built in, placed, and turn the key, and get to work."

The project costs about $6 million and was funded through a variety of community organizations.
