Settlement reached in wrongful death lawsuit against deputy who killed Sedalia woman
SEDALIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A settlement has been reached in the wrongful death lawsuit that was filed against a Pettis County Deputy who killed a Sedalia woman in June 2020.
The amount in the settlement was not disclosed in court documents. Hannah Fizer, 25, of Sedalia, was killed in the shooting after a traffic stop on June 13, 2020.
Fizer’s father, John Fizer, filed the wrongful death lawsuit against Deputy Jordan Schutte in February 2021. The order approving the settlement was filed on Sept. 6, and the judgement was entered Thursday, Sept. 21. The receipt of payment was also entered on Sept. 21.
The judgement shows 50% of the settlement will go to John Fizer, and the other half will go to Amy Fizer, Hannah’s mother.
According to previous reporting, the deputy had told investigators that Fizer said she had a gun in the car and she said she was going to shoot him.
Investigators did not find a gun in the car. Previous reporting indicates the special prosecutor reviewing the case determined the killing was legally justified in September 2020.
Protesters gathered days after the shooting to show support for Fizer and her family.
