Central Missouri Humane Society supends taking in animals as dogs get sick

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Central Missouri Humane Society said Friday that it won't take in new animals other than strays for two weeks amid an outbreak of dog respiratory illnesses.

The upper respiratory infections include pneumovirus, the shelter said in a news release. The virus is highly contagious among dogs but can't be spread to cats or humans, the shelter says.

The shelter won't take animals -- other than strays -- for two weeks to help stop the spread of the virus and other illnesses. CMHS will remain open to scan for microchips and help with basic supplies for people who find strays.

CMHS is also asking for foster families to care for shelter pets while they're being adopted.
