Hearing scheduled for juvenile accused in fatal south Columbia shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A juvenile charged with second degree murder, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action is set to having a status hearing Friday at 9 a.m. at the Boone County Courthouse after their alleged involvement with the murder of Janet Jago, 72.

This hearing has already been pushed back three times before. The first scheduled hearing was scheduled for June of 2023, but was reset for July 7 as their attorney was still working on discovery and evaluations.

The second hearing scheduled for July was again pushed back after a motion was filed for an evaluation to be done and rescheduled for August 25th, which again was moved to happen Friday.

Back in May, officers responded to a robbery in progress call, but then found Jago shot in her home on East Tayside Circle. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

However, the juvenile did not act alone as police identified Jermaine Burnett, 32 as another suspect in the case.

The following day, Columbia Police were in a nine hour standoff with Burnett, who police identified as one of the suspects in the homicide. Police say Burnett died after he apparently shot himself in an apartment at Forest Hills.

Burnett had been in and out of jail since 2009, with his most recent release being in December of 2022. Court records show his involvement in tampering with cars, property damage, assault, stealing, domestic assault, robbery, having a weapon in prison and tampering with a witness.
