More hearings set before June trial for man accused of killing wife in 2006
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A couple more hearings are now set before a jury trial begins for a man accused of killing his wife more than 17 years ago.
Keith Comfort, 41, is charged with second-degree murder. He is being held in the Boone County Jail on a $5 million bond. Prosecutors say Comfort told police in 2019 that he killed his wife, Meghan Shultz, who he reported missing to the Columbia Police Department on Aug. 5, 2006.
The state and defense are both ready for trial. The defense will conduct its final deposition Monday. A motion hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 9 and Comfort is expected to appear in person. The trial is set to begin 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 12. There will be a jury pool of 85 people.
Comfort allegedly told police in 2019 that when he arrived at the apartment in the 1700 block of Amelia Street in 2006, Shultz was frantic and swinging her arms. Comfort then allegedly strangled Shultz, and when he realized she wasn’t breathing, he put her body in a garbage bag and put it in the dumpster at the apartment complex, according to previous reporting.
