Local organizations to hold job fair after the City of Columbia suspends curbside recycling due to staffing shortages
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The City of Columbia along with other organizations will hold a job fair Thursday at Columbia Mall.
According to organizers, the job fair will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon near H&M.
Event information also say as many as 40 employers from different industries could be in attendance looking for new staff members. The job fair is open to job seekers with all skills and experience levels.
Organizers say on-site interviews are also expected to be conducted.
The job fair comes as The City of Columbia announced in a Wednesday night press release that curbside recycling pickup will be temporarily suspended until at least June 20, due to staffing shortages.
Solid Waste Utility says it will monitor and evaluate staffing levels in order to restore this service as soon as staffing levels allow, according to the release.
The City on Wednesday also canceled its household hazardous waste drop-off event set for June 3, according to a press release. The event was canceled so staff could focus on residential trash collection after Memorial Day.
In the meantime, the city says customers may take recyclable materials to one of the nine recycling drop-off sites the City has available.
This change comes after recycling pickup was put on hold twice last week due to staffing shortages. In addtion, another affect of shortages is more overflowing recycling bins, the city says they are aware of the problem,
In 2020, curbside pickup for recycling in Columbia was temporarily suspended due to staffing shortages brought on by COVID-19. In February 2021, the City reintroduced recycling pickup on a biweekly schedule.
The city tells ABC 17 May 10 that staffing shortages have been something they have been dealing with for seven or eight years now and currently, 25% of the city's residential curbside positions are open.
