RECAP: Mizzou wrestling claims 12th consecutive conference title

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Winning has become an expectation for the Mizzou wrestling team as Brian Smith's group claimed their 12th consecutive conference title this season.

"Everywhere we go it seems like they're setting an attendance record when we're going in," Smith said. "People are coming to see us wrestling and hoping that we get beat"

The Tigers left Oklahoma at the top of the Big 12 conference, but even though they brought home another trophy, Smith said his group was not satisfied with their performance.

"We had a bad last round. We lost a lot of close matches, five close matches and so there was more disappointment than excitement for the trophy," Smith said. "That was an expected thing to happen."

With another piece of hardware in the trophy case, Smith has now captured the most league titles in the history of Mizzou surpassing legendary men's basketball coach Norm Stewart. 

"There's no coach in this building that has worked with Norm, expect for me," Smith said. "When I got here, he was the guy and he even gave me advice when I was this 32 year old new head coach."

Up next - Mizzou is taking all ten starters to the NCAA Tournament that is set to kick off on Thursday morning. The Tigers have five wrestlers seeded in the top 10 in their weight class, including reigning National Champ Keegan O'Toole at second and Big 12 champ Rocky Elam at third.
