DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The France family migrated from Washington, D.C. to Florida because Bill France Sr. said he wanted to escape the cold. But the young businessman and mechanic was a racing enthusiast. France chose Daytona Beach to settle because of the racing on the sand. It led him in 1948 to formalize the National Association of Stock Car Racing. NASCAR will begin celebrating its 75th season on Sunday with a sold-out Daytona 500.
