Columbia man charged with several felonies following chase through city
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Columbia man was accused of several crimes on Thursday morning after leading a Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy on a chase.
Brian D. Murphy, 58, was charged with resisting arrest, driving while revoked and possession of a controlled substance. He is being held on a $25,000 bond at the Boone County Jail.
Murphy was driving a black Mercury sedan on Interstate 70 near the Rangeline Street exit. The deputy checked the registration and it was set for a different vehicle, according to the probable cause statement.
The deputy attempted a traffic stop in the 1400 block of Rangeline Street and Murphy allegedly accelerated and led deputies on a seven-minute chase in the city, including Broadway Street in Downtown Columbia. Murphy allegedly drove faster than 100 miles per hour.
Murphy stopped the car in a residential area and ran away from the vehicle. He ran into a backyard of a house in the 2200 block of Concordia Street. Deputies used a K-9 to track him and found Murphy hiding in the yard under a kayak.
Deputies found a bag that Murphy said contained methamphetamine, according to the probable cause statement. Murphy had four active probation violation warrants, according to the statement.
He has a probation violation hearing set for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9 at the Boone County Courthouse.
Murphy pleaded guilty on Aug. 2 to possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. He pleaded guilty in another case on the same date for possession of a controlled substance.
He received a suspended sentenced of four years in the Department of Corrections and five years of supervised probation.
