Burglary suspect taken into custody following standoff
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Columbia burglary suspect was taken into custody after a standoff on Friday.
Columbia Police went to the 5700 block of Rocky Fork Drive to serve warrants for a burglary that happened on Tuesday at the Arch Apartments.
Detectives identified Dorice Reue Smith, 27, of Columbia as the suspect in the burglary.
According to police, Smith refused to exit the residence on Rocky Fork Drive and barricaded himself inside.
After an hour, Smith surrendered to police without incident.
The Columbia Police Street Crimes Unit, Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT, and the Boone County Sheriff's Office all assisted in the investigation.
Witnesses said they heard loud sirens and saw vehicles lined along the road with one parked in the middle, blocking anyone from driving through.
Smith is charged with first-degree burglary, two counts of felony possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, property damage and two counts of stealing a firearm.
According to court documents, the burglary victim was alerted to motion on a security camera on Tuesday night.
A Columbia police officer responded to the scene in the 3200 block of Rock Quarry Road and spotted a man getting into a car. The officer told the man to stop, but the man fled the scene.
The victim said two firearms were stolen from a safe as well as wrapped Christmas gifts. A window had also been broken into.
According to the probable cause statement, the security footage of the burglar matched the man who fled the scene and was identified as Dorice Smith.
