Better Business Bureau: Be wary of fake charities

A month meant to raise awareness and resources for the fight against childhood cancer has drawn a warning from the Better Business Bureau about charity scams.

The BBB is warning potential donors to research charities to make sure they are secure and reputable. The organization says to research a charity’s website, look at its mission statement and be aware of its level of transparency.

Michelle Gleba, a regional director for BBB said, “September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and you know, we just want people to know, that if you decide to give to a charity to support this cause or any other cause it’s important to do your homework first.”

BBB says the organization’s latest IRS Form 990 should be readily available. Don’t rely on bloggers or influencers to find a reputable charity because they may not have done research before advertising for the organization, BBB said in a news release.

Also, BBB says never pay by gift card or money transfer — credit card or check are much safer.
“Scammers notoriously take advantage of whatever is popular whatever that may be,” Gleba said. “So it really just depends on the circumstance.”
BBB has a website called GIVE.org where you can find legitimate charities.
