Tracking big temperature swings in both directions, on both sides of our next rain chance

TODAY: Wednesday brings back enough warming to put us in record breaking territory. Expect breezy south winds sustained at 10-15 mph, with gusts around 20-25 mph to warm us to near 80 this afternoon. Our record high for today is 78, set in 1999. Skies are partly cloudy, and we'll likely see more sunshine than Tuesday.

TONIGHT: Winds stay breezy, and skies remain partly cloudy. Temperatures only fall into the low 60s, meaning we could set a record for the highest low temperature recorded on November 10th. The record is currently 58, set in 2012, which you may remember as an anomalously dry and warm year.

EXTENDED: This extreme upswing will be followed by an extreme downturn in temperatures as well. We'll reach mid-to-upper 70s again Thursday before a cold front arrives Thursday evening. This dynamic system will bring a severe threat to our northwest, but ingredients are insufficient here at home to get much going. We'll see a deteriorating line of storms turn into showers. This system will die out over mid-MO, but not before dumping some more much needed rain. Recent trends are upwards in terms of precipitation amounts. It's now beginning to look like a half inch is possible along a narrow corridor stretching from Truman Lake and the Warsaw area, to Macon and Audrain counties. Outside of that band, we'll likely see totals taper off to less than a quarter of an inch in places like Rolla and Owensville. Now to the big temperature dive. We expect highs on Friday to climb only into the low 40's, with wind chill values in the low 30s. Highs fall into the 30's on Saturday, and may just barely recover into the 40s on Sunday. Early morning lows each day will do well not to fall into the teens as low 20s are currently forecast to start each day Saturday through Monday.
