Charges filed in shooting at south Columbia roundabout
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Boone County prosecutors charged a Columbia man Thursday with four felonies for an October shooting and crash at a busy south Columbia roundabout.
Derrick D. Blackmon was not in the Boone County Jail on Friday, according to online jail records. Court records said his arrest warrant had not been served Friday morning.
Blackmon is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and leaving the scene of a crash, all felonies. He is also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.
The shooting and crash happened Oct. 14 at Nifong Boulevard and Sinclair Road -- the intersection where Woodcrest Chapel church and Mill Creek Elementary School at located. A Columbia police officer was sitting in the school parking lot that evening when he heard about four gunshots and found two crashed vehicles -- a silver BMW and a black Ford Fusion -- at the roundabout, according to a probable cause statement.
The cars were positioned with the front driver-side doors nearly touching each other and a man was outside the BMW's passenger side with a gunshot wound in the back, the statement says. The Fusion was registered to Blackmon.
A witness who had a dash camera in their vehicle captured the crash and showed the shooting and a person running from the scene. A detective identified Blackmon as the man who ran from the scene with a gun after the shooting, according to the statement.
The statement says Blackmon called emergency dispatchers on Oct. 18 and requested a call back from police but did not answer the phone when they called back.
