U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assessing damaged levees
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continued to assess damaged levees on Tuesday.
The Corps is getting aerial views of the levees that they’re unable to travel to by vehicle, said emergency management specialist Rick Weixelbaum.
He said this year’s effort is the largest levee rehabiliation in the Kansas City district since 1993.
The Corps will rank the damaged levees, first by their current impact on preserving life and second by their economic benefit, to prioritize which levees to repair first, he said.
The Capital View Levee, located in southern Callaway County near Jefferson City, failed in May and is awaiting an assessment from the Army Corps of Engineers.
“Not really doing much now until the water goes down again,” said Capital View Levee District board member David Boessen.
He said the levee has four holes but he doesn’t expect water to cause any additional breaches.
“Water will come into the ones that are here and go out,” he said.
