Columbia city council approves climate plan
The Columbia City Council unanimously approved a climate plan that has been in the works for more than a year at Monday’s meeting.
The plan is a move to “address risks posed by climate change and contribute to international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” according to the council memo.
Now that the plan has passed, the city has a number of goals to reach over several decades. The city must become carbon neutral, meaning it would have zero carbon emissions, by 2060, according to the plan. Another goal is to increase accessibility to bike and walking paths, as well as public transit.
There would also be an overall transition to renewable energy, according to the plan.
Monday night’s vote did not trigger any immediate action on taking steps in the plan.
