Republic Services discontinues recycling in Cole County

Officials with Republic Services of Jefferson City confirmed the organization stopped curbside recycling in Cole County, with the exception of Jefferson City, at the beginning of the month.

“This decision was made due to the global recycling crisis that made the current recycling model unsustainable,” officials said. “We have an educational presentation to give to the city on the state of recycling and the current challenges, and we look forward to working with the city to develop a durable recycling model. We are in the process of evaluating all options for recycling services going forward.”

Republic Services will present the information to Jefferson City Council on Monday.

Jefferson City Administrator Steve Crowell said Republic Services requested the opportunity to address the City Council about its concerns in continuing to provide recycling services to the city under its current model.

The city also contracts Republic Services for residential solid waste collection and disposal, accordin to Crowell.
