CPS reports higher than average first-day-of-school enrollment, ACT scores

The Columbia Public Schools held it's World-Cafe discussion Thursday night to gather feedback for the Missouri School Improvement Program 6.
More than 100 people attended the meeting, including community members, parents and the Board of Education and district administration.
The meeting was held in part to receive feedback from the community regarding CPS continued growth, and will be used for the Missouri School Improvement Program.
Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, created the MSIP 6 rule.
MSIP defines success as a compilation of standard, which leads to success in the next grade level, or chapter in a student's life.
CPS reported it's performance level is at a 70%.
Achievement status measures the performance growth of students who are proficient in state assessments, which was at 24% for CPS. Individual-student growth accounted for 24% of the total achievement growth.
Superintendent Brian Yearwood said the district can receive full points if they can get at least 90% of all students to fall in to any one of these categories.
CPS is sitting at 30% for it's Continuous Improvement Plan. CIP measures the districts performance, and the districts improvements, which measures at 15%.
CPS reported an increase of nearly 1,000 students for the first day of school enrollment this year compared to last year, surpassing pre-pandemic enrollment numbers.
Teacher retention has declined 1%, from 88% in 2021-2022, to 87% in 2022-2023, a 4% decline from 2019-2021 -- when the district had a 91% retention rate.
The state expects at least 90% of the districts' students to be in attendance 90% of the time. CPS reports they typically have 85% of students in class 90% of the time, however in 2022, only 68% of students were in class 90% of the time.
"We have to improve on this, we have to get them to school to be able to teach them," Yearwood said.
CPS ranks well for it's average ACT scores, despite a dip in the average from 2020 to 2021. In the 2019-2020 school year the average ACT score for CPS was 21.8, in 2020-2021, the average score was 21.4. The average score in Missouri in 2020-2021 was 20.8. The national average was 20.3.
Yearwood said 90% of CPS students take the ACT.
CPS Chief Communication Officer Michelle Baumstark said the World Cafe discussion is one component to a larger effort to gather feedback from all stakeholders in the school district. Baumstark said all the feedback gathered during the meeting, from employees and from a survey -- which the district plans to send out next week -- will be used to guide the development of the districts strategic plan.
