Missouri S&T cancels St. Pat’s celebration as Rolla patient is tested for novel coronavirus
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla and the University of Missouri-Columbia Legion of Black Collegians on Wednesday canceled events amid the spread of COVID-19.
Health officials in Phelps County, where Missouri S&T is located, said they tested one person who might have novel coronavirus.
The university, located in Rolla, said all of its events related to St. Patrick's Day were called off.
A tweet from the university said a teaching and learning conference has also been canceled.
A hospital also located in Rolla said a patient was tested for COVID-19 at 10:43 a.m.
The Facebook post from Phelps Health said the person does not have a confirmed case, but that results were pending as of 11:51 a.m.
The Legion of Black Collegians on MU's campus tweeted just before noon that all future events have been canceled because of coronavirus concerns.
The organization reported elections will be moved to a different date.
The World Health Organization announced COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic on Wednesday.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said about 118,000 cases of novel coronavirus have been confirmed around the world. He said COVID-19 epidemics in China and South Korea have declined.
