COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia firefighters put out a residential structure fire in the 2000 block of Quail Drive.

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire just before 9 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters arriving on the scene five minutes later reported smoke and flames shows from the house.

Officials with the fire department report crews searched the residence for anyone inside and did not find anyone.

Officials report that crews on scene were able to get the fire under control in 8 minutes after arrival.

Officials with the department report the heavy fire damage to the apartment's living room and moderate damage to the rest of the apartment.

Red Cross was called to assist a family that lived in one of the units that were on fire.

The Columbia fire department is reporting they believe improperly discarded smoking material caused the fire.

Officials on the scene report no one was injured.
