Officials say levee repairs are almost complete after the 2019 flood destroyed them

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Officials say they just have two more levees to repair after a flood-damaged them back in 2019.

A total of 65 levees needed repairs across the state; crews are anticipating the remaining levels will be complete by the end of May.

The US Army Corps says $60 million was used to repair the flood damages back in 2019.

Fortunately this year, the US Army Corps says the weather service has a pretty good spring flood outlook for Missouri.

"They're calling for lower chances of flooding on the Missouri River," said Mike Dulin, emergency management specialist at USACE.

But Dulin said come summertime, Missourians could experience some minor flooding on the Missouri River North and East of Kansas City.

On a good note, Dulin says the snow-pack shouldn't cause too many floods this year.

"So right now flooding from mountain snowpack and or plain snowpack are extremely unlikely. So I think we're headed into the spring and summer in a good spot," said Dulin.

Historic flooding damaged levee's across the state nearly two years ago. The Missouri River burst through and then over-topped levees in Northwest and Central Missouri.

Britt Smith, who works for Jefferson City Public Works, says the levees had extensive damage when the flood-hit back in 2019 but Smith says it is in a good place now.

"It was a scary year when we didn't have protection during that time but we're happy that we're back up and rolling now," said Smith.

According to the National Weather Service, the major flood stage is set at 30 feet. The NWS says the river in Jefferson City is at 23 feet.
