Ideal running weather for the NCAA cross country championship this weekend

The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Championships are coming to Gans Creek this year, and a muddy and cool meet is in the forecast.

The races are expected to be ideal, with sunny skies and cool temperatures on Saturday morning. However, the ground might be muddy from recent rain.

Rain is forecasted through early Friday night, but conditions should improve before runners start on Saturday morning. Low pressure will move out of the area overnight, clearing rain and clouds before dawn.

Soggy courses are still likely after a widespread half-inch to an inch of rain or more across the region. As of early Friday afternoon, Columbia has already received over half an inch of rain, with another quarter to half an inch possible before the rain stops Friday night.

Some runners may enjoy the wet conditions as part of their race, while others may find wet shoes and clothes inconvenient. No matter your preference, you can dress appropriately for the wet weather.

Avoid cotton, which absorbs water and gets heavy. Synthetic, moisture-wicking fabrics are better suited to keep you dry or to shed water quickly.

Nobody likes wet socks, so look for thinner, moisture-wicking ones that drain water efficiently. If you're practicing before a meet, consider bringing an extra pair of shoes and socks to start the race feeling fresh.

The forecast also calls for cool temperatures on Saturday morning, which can be advantageous for most athletes. Ideal running temperatures are generally between 40 and 60 degrees, and we're expecting to be in the 40s and 50s for the championship meet.

If you're bringing an extra windbreaker for the run, make sure it's lightweight and breathable.
