Weather Alert Day: Dangerous heat comes to an end

A stretch of ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Days comes to an end Wednesday night as a cold front finally brings an end to the extreme heat.

A heat dome is expected to break down late this week, ushering in cool northerly winds and a significant cooldown to the region.

It is still important to take care with warmer temperatures in the summertime.

Cities will likely be a few degrees hotter, especially places like St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Columbia, and Jefferson City with more urban coverage.

Try to limit your time outdoors during peak hot hours. If you must work outside, take more frequent breaks in the shade or, if you can, in air conditioning. Drinks with added electrolytes and extra water are key to staying hydrated.

Keep pets inside and be mindful of asphalt temperatures during their brief bathroom breaks. Make sure you have the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather app to keep an eye on hourly temperatures for your location each day.
