Insider Blog: Statewide tornado count reaches double digits for the month

Mid-Missouri is in the peak of severe weather season as May is typically the most active month for tornadoes in the state. This has already played out this year with a confirmed 10 tornadoes in the last week, and more surveys are still ongoing. Missouri sees an average of 14 tornadoes in May, almost double the April average of 8.

Recent tornadoes have impacted all parts of the state from Kansas City to St. Louis down to Springfield and the Ozarks. Six tornadoes this week have been rated an EF1 based on the damage left behind to structures and trees. The town of Sullivan Missouri saw two tornadoes from separate events almost a day apart.

With more time left in the severe season, it's important to remain weather aware and fight off storm fatigue. Always have a plan in place ahead of the storm and know your personal risk. The safest place to shelter from a tornado is in an interior room with no windows.
