Climate Matters: Solar saw big gains in Missouri last year

Renewable energy has grown steadily over the last decade and 2023 was no different with the United States producing more clean energy than ever before. Missouri is also following this trend as the state saw a marked increase in its solar capacity just last year.

Like our Midwest neighbors, the Show-Me state sources most renewable energy from wind. About three-quarters of Missouri's renewable energy output comes from wind, and combined with hydropower adds up to 90% of our clean energy sources. While solar makes up only some of the remaining portion, solar production in the state has tripled since 2018 and is expected to keep growing.

There are many options to go solar that don't just involve paying for solar panels on your rooftop. Many private utilities can bring in their solar panels and maintain them on your property, though this may mean fewer incentives for your bill. Local energy companies like Ameren have also been investing in renewables and local community projects to give Mid-Missourians even more ways to save on their energy bill.

If paying for a personal solar array on your home seems daunting or nonfeasible, community solar projects are another way to reduce your bills with the aid of your neighbors. Projects like those Ameren is championing in Missouri can produce power for a community that crowdfunds for the solar farm's construction. Several of these facilities already provide electricity to Missouri homes, with one right here in Mid-Missouri in Montgomery County.

Ameren says this solar farm produces 7 MW of power for residents in Montgomery County. 2024 is also expected to be a big year for Ameren with more community projects on the table. This is all part of the company's plans to achieve net zero by 2045.
