Insider Blog: Why fall foliage is changing ahead of schedule

Fall colors are already popping up across the area as the season officially kicked off this past weekend. This rushed change has been expected thanks to a brutal summer, and we are now seeing fall foliage weeks ahead of the typical schedule. Brown and dull leaves are also likely into the fall as we continue reeling from drought.

Mid-MO usually sees the change in foliage into October as temperatures drop off and less sunlight triggers trees to drop their leaves. But this pattern can be easily disrupted by other environmental factors, including a glaring culprit here at home. Severe to extreme drought is still affecting the region, and this is known to stress trees into dropping their leaves early as they attempt to conserve water. This is also the reason for our accelerated fall colors this year and some accompanying brittle brown foliage.

Even if conditions improve in the coming months, the impacts of drought are already being observed, meaning it's unlikely the shift in foliage will hold off. Some nice shades are still shining through so be sure to head out as soon as you can to enjoy the gorgeous foliage!
