How soil saturation can aid in flooding

Obviously, the number one issue that causes flooding is rainfall. Whether we see a long period of rain or a short period of intense rainfall, it can overwhelm the ground and waterways leading to overflow.

Saturated soils can also account for flooding issues as the soil is unable to absorb the excess moisture brought on by the rain. As the rain has nowhere to go, it collects on the surface and leads to flooding.

Our soil saturation here in Missouri is varied with areas along and north of I-70 seeing saturation levels between 90-98%. Many areas south of the interstate are neither saturated nor dry, but with the rainfall likely hitting areas that are already saturated, flooding will be a main concern.

As always, if you come across water, rushing or standing, turn around and avoid travelling through it.
