Labor Day climatology and a look into September
The first day of September has started off on the cooler side with the afternoon high only reaching up to 78 degrees. On a typical Labor Day in Columbia, Missouri the average high sits seven degrees warmer at 85 degrees.
Rainfall totals for the year have slipped below average by nearly three inches as a result of a dry August and Labor Day.
If you are a fan of cooler fall trends then there is good news as afternoon average highs fall off aggressively with highs starting into the mid-80s and falling 10 degrees by the 30th.
When looking throughout the next week, Mid-Missouri stays below average for our afternoon highs. This trend looks to continue to follow us deeper into the extended forecast out 6-10 days away thanks to a high pressure system remaining across the western United States.
When looking back at August for Columbia, Missouri rainfall totals fell about 4" shy of the average. This is an alarmingly dry August.
These drier conditions have allowed for the return of drought back across portions of Osage, Gasconade, Montgomery, and Callaway counties. If a drier than average month persist into September, worries of worsened drought will increase also increasing the threat for wildfire conditions across Mid-Missouri.
