Storms brought early morning large hail and heavy rain, high winds continue

It was a noisy and soggy start to Sunday for much of the area with a handful of severe storms and lots of thunder. High winds will become our next problem after storms exit today.

SETUP

A potent system passed through the Midwest overnight Saturday into Sunday, increasing moisture and winds and destabilizing the environment.

After this system exits early on Sunday, we'll be left breezy behind it with winds above 30 mph by the afternoon.

REPORTS

Large hail was reported across western and southern Missouri overnight with a 2" hailstone reported just south of I-44. Other reports of ping pong ball-sized hail were common to the west.

High winds were also recorded in parts of the area, even outside of thunderstorms. The Columbia Regional Airport reported a 57 mph wind gust around 5 AM when no storms were nearby on radar. High winds will be a nuisance behind the storms today but will not be nearly as strong—afternoon wind gusts may exceed 30 mph on Sunday.
