Tracking a major winter storm over the Northeastern U.S.

The weather across Mid-Missouri has been relatively quiet when it comes to winter storms as of the past week. The same has not been true for northeastern portions of the United States as a major storm continues to push through the area causing widespread driving hazards.

Some areas have seen freezing rain to large totals of snow such as Utica, New York seeing snow cover totals sitting at 37" with some of the snow being from the past 24 hours. Manchester, New Hampshire has seen just under 8" of snow cover and continue to to see falling snow as of Thursday afternoon.

The current low pressure system blanketing the region with such impressive snow totals is pulling most of its moisture from the Great Lakes in the lower-level jet stream. This is then carried east and trails the current cold front getting closer to the Atlantic. The good news is there is a slight break starting late tonight as the current system pushes offshore.

Additional storms are expected across the region beginning this weekend looking to supply additional snowfall. Some areas can expect to see over a foot of additional snow as a more active upper-level jet stream is going to supply additional fronts trough the area met with cooler temperatures.
