The “why?” behind today’s heat

It's no shock that today felt unseasonably warm. Highs across the region shot up into the upper 60s to mid 70s. This led to many people outdoors enjoying the break from cooler temperatures expected to return later this week.

Columbia tied its all-time recorded high this afternoon last set back into 2020 at 72 degrees. Many cities across Mid-Missouri surpassed their long standing records.

Mid-Missouri sat behind a warm front promoting a warmer air mass over the region. Minimal cloud cover also aided the significant warm-up.

The 850 millibar know as the lower-level jet stream has seen winds largely out of the southwest promoting the warm-up as air has transferred from Texas and Oklahoma back to Mid-Missouri. This warm-up will remain short-lived as a cold front looks to pass through the area tonight cooling temperatures back down.
