Tracking a wintry mess throughout the day
TODAY: Heavy snow will fall primarily north of I-70 today, mixing with sleet along the interstate and areas south. Sleet transitions to freezing rain near the Lake and I-44 where the worst ice accumulation is possible. Totals remain on track with 8 to 12 inches of snow possible north of I-70, possibly more in isolated spots. Snow and sleet combined along I-70 down to Jefferson City will be between 4 to 8 inches, dropping to 2 to 4 inches for the rest of our southern counties. Freezing rain accumulates up to a quarter to half-inch at the Lake over to Vienna and I-44 and areas southeast. Precipitation switch to sleet then snow areawide tonight.
TOMORROW: Snowfall wraps up after sunrise Monday but what's on the ground will stick around as highs remain in the teens. Lows on Monday night are expected to drop near or below zero as arctic air moves in.
EXTENDED: Lows remain near zero with highs in the teens through Wednesday, with some improvement late in the week. Highs are still only expected to reach back to around freezing in the 30s with a system tracking across the southern US ahead of next weekend. Precipitation chances look lower in our area but we are monitoring this late-week setup.
