Tracking potential for severe storms Tuesday afternoon ahead of a cooldown later in the week

TODAY: Tuesday is an ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day. It is another warm day, with temperatures climbing to near 80 by the afternoon. This will be slightly cooler than Monday, as we'll be tracking showers and storms through the morning that will have somewhat of a cooling effect. Showers and storms will be very hit and miss through the early morning, but a wave after 9 a.m. will bring the most widespread coverage. Shower and thunderstorms will exist in this band, and we may even get a strong storm or two embedded in this cluster. This will span the noon hour, before nearing our eastern counties in the early afternoon, before exiting. It's at this time, around 1-2 p.m. that will be crucial to our potential for a secondary, more potent round of storms. If we can get the atmosphere to heat and destabilize quickly, we will see potential for a high end severe weather threat that spans the course of only a few hours. The short lived threat will be along the dry line as it sweeps through the region on the back end of this system. This will conclude our severe threat by 7-9 p.m. For more, read our Weather Alert Day Blog.

TONIGHT: We will cool some behind this line of storms, but our biggest change will be our humidity. Overnight temperatures fall into the 50s, but dewpoints fall into the 30s and 40s.

EXTENDED: Wednesday will be partly cloudy with highs in the 70s. Another round of showers and storms arrives Thursday, but any severe threat remains well south of I-44, and out of mid-Missouri. We'll be a little cooler, with highs near 70, possibly in the 60s. We'll cool into the low 60s behind the rain on Friday, and a cooldown ensues to drop us into the 30s Sunday morning, triggering a discussion about potential for frost. We'll be dry over the weekend, with highs in the 60s.
