TUESDAY LATE AFTERNOON UPDATE:

Snow showers are starting to exit the region from west to east, with snow ending east of Highway 63 between 6-7:00 p.m. While snow showers will come to an end, visibility could still be low as winds have gusted past 35 mph in some spots. Slick spots will be possible into the morning as low temperatures drop into the upper teens.

Snow amounts have ranged from 2-6" across most of Mid-Missouri, with the highest amounts north of Highway 24 and west of Highway 65.

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day for the potential of accumulating snow, strong winds, and road impacts early next week as a strong low pressure system is expected to move across the Plains and into southern Missouri through tomorrow night.

The Setup:

Low pressure is working its way across the Plains this evening, prompting several winter alerts ahead of accumulating, blowing snow. That low is expected to track across southern Missouri into south the central Illinois by tomorrow.

Timing:

We'll see a rain/snow line likely set up around the Missouri River, with points north seeing mostly snow through about 10-11:00 p.m. Monday. We'll see a break in precipitation as the low pressure center drifts right over the region, with light rain showers possible. Precipitation ramps back up by mid-late morning Tuesday with the next round being predominantly light snow through Tuesday evening. The back edge of snow looks to clear Mid-Missouri between 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Impacts:

Areas north of I-70 will likely see mostly snow for the duration of this event, with the highest snow totals exceeding 6-8". Areas south of the Missouri River will likely have some rain cutting into snow totals, but at least 1-3" is likely. Northern sections of Mid-Missouri will see significant impacts to travel between Monday night and Tuesday, especially north of Highway 24. Roads will likely be slushy and/or snow covered, and blowing snow could be an issue with wind gusts up to 35 mph through Wednesday morning as low pressure exits.

Prepare:

Closings and delays are possible between Monday evening, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning. If you must travel, give yourself extra time to get to and from your destination, or try to delay your trip if at all possible. Prepare for strong winds, slick roads, and low visibility.
