Tracking a wet Christmas Eve
TODAY: Sunday is another warm and cloudy day, with a dry start and a wet end. We'll see rain beginning in the west by late morning at the soonest. Places near Sedalia, Warsaw, Marshall, and Brunswick may see showers as soon as 10-11 am. Otherwise, showers will largely hold off until after the noon hour, before becoming most widespread after 7 p.m. into the overnight hours. Sunday's highs will be close to 60, much like Saturday.
TONIGHT: The bulk of the rain comes during the overnight hours. Anywhere between a quarter of an inch, to an inch or more is possible, with the greatest totals coming in the west, closer to the path of the area of low pressure. Rain will come in waves from the afternoon, through overnight, not clearing until Monday, Christmas day.
EXTENDED: Christmas morning will be warm, starting in the 50s. Rain will clear for the most part after about 9 a.m., save for a few spotty showers. With this clearing, comes a cold front, and temperatures in the 40s. We'll cool through the day, behind the rain, falling into the low 40s, and possibly 30s by the evening. Cooler air will linger in the forecast, with highs in the 30s Tuesday and Wednesday. A dry slot works in for the most part on Tuesday, keeping us partly cloudy and largely dry, but moisture will re-enter the forecast as our Christmas Day low circles back around, Tuesday night into Wednesday. On the back side of the low, we'll pick up a chances for light precipitation, and with forecast temperatures there's a chance it falls as snow. With limited moisture, and temperatures that are borderline freezing, accumulation looks questionable at best, so there's not a concern for travel at this point, but pay close attention to the forecast, as small changes could lead to better accumulation chances. The forecast trends drier as this low leaves us through the end of the week, but we expect to keep highs in the 30s and 40s.
