Boone, Cole county officials have plans in place for flash floods
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Southeast Missouri, western Kentucky and southern Illinois were pounded by heavy rains early Wednesday that led to dangerous flash flooding.
Photos from the area showed people being rescued from floodwaters several feet deep, including in Mayfield, Kentucky, which was badly damaged by a tornado just two years ago.
Boone County also saw flash flooding Wednesday morning but on a much smaller scale. However, first responders have plans in place to react to such disasters.
Boone County saw 2 inches of rain Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A flash flood warning was also issued for Boone County. That warning expired at 5:45 a.m.
Boone County's website lists a plan for what citizens can do in the event of a flood.
Before the storm, Boone County suggests knowing your flood risk and elevation. It is also important to store clean water, prepare food that does not require cooking, have a first aid kit and a disaster supplies kit.
If you are experiencing a flash flood, Boone County's website suggests getting to higher ground and climbing to safety.
After the flood, be sure to throw out food that may have come in contact with flood water.
Cole County's website also includes links for citizens to access and stay safe in a flash flood.
Cole County saw nearly an inch of rain in the past day.
