Tracking a sunny end to the week, weekend rain

TONIGHT: Mostly clear and a cool with patchy fog in low lying areas. Lows in the upper 50s to around 60.

TOMORROW: Mostly sunny and warm with highs in the mid-upper 80s.

EXTENDED: It's nice and cool again overnight with lows falling to about 60, but with light winds we'll likely have some patchy fog developing in river valleys and low lying areas to start the day. The next two days will be dry with highs in the upper 80s. I'll be watching two distinct features to kick off the weekend. Tropical low pressure pushing north from the Gulf region will push across southern Illinois and southeast Missouri early Saturday, bringing more clouds and a few showers possible east of Highway 54. Elsewhere, temperatures remain in the mid-upper 80s. Moving in quickly on its heels will be a strong upper low to our northwest that brings a cold front through the Midwest Saturday night into Sunday. That will trigger a round of showers and a few thunderstorms, but there is still some uncertainty on the speed of the front. If it speeds up, we could end up with a drier afternoon. If it takes its time, we'll end up with more clouds and delayed showers through early evening. Rain amounts look to be around 0.25" or less. Either way, we're cooler with temperatures only making the upper 70s by late afternoon. Once the front clears, we'll cool down considerably Sunday night as we drop into the low 50s. We can expect a cooler than average start to next week with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid-50s by Tuesday morning.
